Looking forward to Phil's ls tomorrow! Can't wait to hear about their Florida trip :D

You haven't?! Yeah it's a regular thing, it's meant to be for kids so that their balls don't just roll into the gutters (bc they obvs don't have enough strength to give the ball enough velocity to go down in a straight-ish line). However, I'm a terrible person and my balls usually zig zag all over the place so I still put the bumpers up so if my ball goes into it, it bounces off wildly and eventually hits some pins lmao.
i really haven't, the bowling place i went to as a kid def didn't have these, you'd just have to grow up! and grow some muscles! so this is life-changing news for me. i don't remember seeing them as a teenager either, but that might be because everyone was ~too cool~ for them then. anyways, thanks for the explanation! that bit in the video makes a lot more sense now.
apologies if i'm misinterpreting both of you and we're on the same page here, but i think dan and phil were actually referring to these!!
Image

also gosh as a kid i got frustrated enough with my inability to bowl well WITH the bumpers up (and sometimes did resort to using..... whatever you wanna call the contraption pictured above), i have no idea how i'd have fared in a bowling alley without them!!

lmao i phrase this post as if my bowling skills have developed to a point where i no longer need to have the bumpers up anymore. ha. ha ha ha. how ridiculous.

I've never seen something like that before o.o

I am pretty sure they ment the little rails that go up when it's the kid's turn. Not sure how exactly Dan phrased it but pretty sure he said something like "When I went bowling as a teenager I put the bumpers up". Using that odd metal construction isn't really something you would "put up", would you?
Not native so I shouldn't try to analyse this based on grammar

He mentioned using the slide as a teenager. I've never seen one that looks so scary and metal though! The ones I've seen are plastic with a cute little dinosaur design or something similar.

phil referred to it as a "friendly rail" and then motioned as if he were pushing a ball down one of the things in the pic i posted, and dan said in his anecdote that he "ironically brought out the rail"!! and if i remember correctly the rails are usually lined up off to the side of the room somewhere, so i think it would make sense for him to say he brought it out. :^) it is a bit odd for them to refer to it as a rail though, i personally think "slide" or "ramp" would be more appropriate.

(i usually avoid being nitpicky about grammar, but i think it's relevant to our conversation, so i'm really sorry if i come off as rude!! that wasn't my intention at all)

the ones i used to use weren't quite like that either -- they were yellow, and more tall than wide -- but definitely not as cute as plastic dinosaur ones sound!!

Mainly popping by to commiserate with you - I'm exactly the same! Last time I went bowling I was like 16 maybe and I still had to use the ramp thing as I have really weak wrists, it's such a struggle. I felt a strong connection to Phil when he mentioned using it :')

I enjoyed the video! It kind of lost me a bit toward the end as the music was so loud I couldn't concentrate on what they were saying (did anyone else notice that?), but for the most part it was good. Their bants were v entertaining, Dan finally held the glass like a normal person, and Phil referenced the Fireman Sam theme song which is an absolute banger 10/10 would recommend.

I am soooo excited for Phil's liveshow tomorrow (the next day for me, god damn it Australia) - as much as I didn't feel like I particularly missed live shows since I was enjoying the thought of them holidaying with the Lesters so much, it just hit me that it's been over two months since Phil last did a solo ls, so it should be good!!

wow, that's another bowling experience i never had tactigdsve i think you're right, though, i just rewatched it and what they say is:
phil: i was actually the person who brought out, like, the friendly rail, and just pushed it down -
dan: i, look - i was, like, once i went bowling as a teen, and i ~ironically~ got the rail - and everyone was like, duuuuuh, don't be a dick, why can't you just, like - all the boys in the group were like, dan, just bowl! be competitive! and i was like, no, i wanna use the rail, who's gonna stop me. i was very annoying.
i just assumed that there wouldn't be two different things to help kids, so when they later commented on the bumpers, i thought dan referenced the same thing. but what they're talking about seems to be something you go get yourself, so it'd make sense to be this cute little slide thing.

edit: i was a bit late with that but i'll leave it here for the full transcript nevertheless.
thank's you were great

Wow, never under estimate the power of videos to cheer you up. I've been in an incredibly low mood recently and i just sat down with some coffee and watched some of Phil's recent videos and I forgot how much I missed him. And not in a creepy way, more of the way he is positive and silly and happy. Really needed it. ASMR video that I rewatched made me laugh so hard.

Looking forward to the liveshow tomorrow, I always enjoy them, even if he is more vague than Dan in his liveshows and doesn't go into too much depth about things, Dan usually balances that out in his. Didn't realise how much I missed them. Sims video was nice and relaxing, I hope and prey that Dil is pregnant with an alien baby because that would throw everything out of order and ultimately be hilarious. :D

Dw! I am always glad to learn about new things. Including... scary looking metal bowling contraptions.

Generally not that big of a fan of Phil's LS (I prefer the rambly life advice from Dani) but it's been so long that I am excited to hear some crazy squirrel stories.

I know this was a few pages back, but this is really bothering me. Dan's tweet that says "REEEE" is pretty messed up. I get that he was mocking film critics or whatever, but that doesn't make it okay. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, saying "REEEE" is a meme called "autistic screeching" that basically makes fun of autistic people and their temper tantrums. As a mentally ill person, I wouldn't appreciate people mocking my disorders. I get that he probably didn't know, but that still doesn't make it okay. Now his young and impressionable fans are just laughing along. I don't think this should just be blown off.

I mentioned this a few pages back, but I really don't think he was using that meme. There's no way he would risk the potential audience backlash, he's not an idiot - Dan know's his audience and knows a majority of his fans wouldn't approve.

I think he was just using a casual noise of anger or frustration, like when people type "AAAAAA" or "RRRRRR" when finishing a sentence. It just reminded me of his re-branding video when he pushed the scissors towards his eyes out of annoyance.

I think Dan didn't/doesn't know that the meme was used to make fun of autistic people, so he also didn't/doesn't know he would face backlash.

Also, saying "REEEE" is just too coincidental. We know Dan and we know he knows his memes. It would also make sense since recently seems like he's trying to appeal to the edgy straight male audience who makes those kinds of jokes.

i want to add to this as someone on the autistic spectrum.
i've never seen the "REEEE" stuff as directly talking about autistic people specifically, but about people getting really worked up about minor things. its just that THAT is something common in autistic people, so some people wont just make fun of someone for getting mad that a franchise isnt aimed at them, theyll ALSO connect it to autism, in the same way people add sexual or racial slurs to normal insults. but as a pair d+p arent very sensitive to autistic issues, not that i'd expect they would be

pretty much all autistic characteristics are called "weird" and most of the things people find it perfectly fine to laugh at connect back to being on the autistic spectrum, allistic people just often dont acknowledge it because its hilarious to make fun of 10 year old boys who get very excited by video games or adult men who are involved in hobbies people find childlike and who dont have very developed social skills. hilarious photos of someone wearing a strange outfit or doing something out of the ordinary in public? yeah...

phil making himself cross eyed and ~creepy~ imitating strangers he met who clearly didnt understand acceptable social interactions? literally the reason i never wanted to meet them when i was a more involved fan, i didnt want to mess up an interaction and get a video about how i was crazy.
the pair of them insisting its so WEIRD to be obsessed with things and not liking going outside, but its okayy guyzzzz because all of US are weird? autistic people are told enough that we're weird for these behaviours, it'd be better to just... like... normalise it and say "it is not weird to like a tv show", not keep the "sooooo weird!!" thing going.

basically, most innocent things people happily make fun of are connected to the behaviours of autistic people even if the person doing it isnt themselves on the spectrum. and you kind of just have to tune it out and hope that at least if these people learn that someone was doing those things IS on the spectrum then theyd stop it

I'm curious, what other instances of him trying to appeal to edgy straight males have there been? I can't think of anything off the top of my head but maybe I just have the attention span of a wooden spoon.

I don't want to think Dan meant anything bad by it. I've personally never heard of that meme (I've avoided 4chan since like 2005) and I know that doesn't mean Dan's not heard of it, but it does suggest it's less well known? (Or maybe I just live under a rock, idk...) The other thing could be perhaps he knows it's a meme but he doesn't know where it originates - perhaps he's just seen it being used, thinks it's an innocent trend, and incorporates it into his lingo accordingly.

I don't know, if Dan's the kind of guy who knowingly mocks autistic people then he's not the guy I thought he was. Or he's not the guy he's been pretending to be the past seven-ish years. It's been a long time since "dark and edgy" was cool in Dan land or on the internet (outside of like, reddit and 4chan, anyway).

Also great points jaej, it's really valuable to hear your perspective. Casual abelism is still sadly way too prevalent.

Re jaej: Thanks for your perspective! Like path said, ableism is so common, it's sad. Also, from the looks of it, "REEEE" is directly related to "autistic screeching" and is directly linked to mocking autists.

Re plath: I'm sure Dan didn't mean anything bad by it, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't be called out on it. I just think he needs to be more careful, especially with an audience like his.

I've never heard of the meme at all. (I'm diagnosed on the autistic spectrum)

this is why I hate shows like tbbt. ppl find it so fing hilarious and than they think that when I'm going through something it's just for a show or something. like it's so easy - I'm so old so why "I don't act like normal grown up" because the population is constantly fed that it's ok to laugh at "weird" things. that it's all maybe done on purpouse by us... (to be told by own fing mother when visiting that wtf is wrong with laughing at that and then a string of verbal insults and abuse, lovely)

but I kind of doubt that Dan knew the exact meaning - maybe he just seen it used as an expression of people getting angry? idk. seems unlikely to me that he would - I can see him doing it maybe back 4-5 years ago, but not sure he would now.

Agree with that - a fair few years ago nothing was really judged or off limits (didn't Phil make a rape joke in a deleted video?) because people really didn't understand how insulting they were being - actually, the constant rape jokes had been spread around so much that my brother and I started to use them casually when we were younger (a LOT younger) and it led to my mum breaking down infront of me and telling me she was raped when she was 14... that's one thing that definitely teaches you that those kind of jokes are wrong.

I barely knew it was associated with autism, I've seen austisim memes (and keep getting annoyed at one of my friends whenever he shares them with me because they really piss me off) but nothing like that tbh. Dan seeing it used as an expression of annoyance from the context and adopting it seems quite likely.

Yes to all of this.

I honestly can't believe some people actually think Dan used a meme that is used to make fun of autistic people.

Especially since clearly the top definition on Urban Dictionary has nothing to do with that. And I think it is quite clear that Dan, and I'm assuming most people, use it with that definition in mind.

"On February 21st, a Redditor submitted the question “Why do people on 4chan’s r9k say ‘REEEEEE’ all of a sudden?” to the /r/OutOfTheLoop subreddit, to which Redditor Dragon___ replied that the sound was similar to shrieks made by autistic people. On March 19th, Redditor Taaqif submitted another question about “Reeeeeee” comments to /r/OutOfTheLoop."

Dragon___'s comment reads: People on 4chan often call each other retarded or autistic. "REEEEE" is a typical noise a mentally ill person would make when upset. Hence, whenever someone on 4chan is upset, they just erupt into autistic and retarded shrieks.

perhaps dan, like me, fails to consult "know your meme" for every meme he adopts.

THANK YOU! I've been following this conversation and contemplating how best to respond, but this is perfect! I have nothing to add. Except maybe we, as internet people, need to work on our outrage levels a bit. Tumblr users already have a bit of a reputation for being perpetually and unnecessarily offended, and I'd rather be known as a passionate fan/literary perv thank you very much.

autistic person here: so i guess the question is, does dan research his memes? and if he does, is it on knowyourmeme or urbandictionary? if he knows the origin as stated on kym, then that's shitty. if knows it from ud, that's not shitty. if he wasn't even intentionally memeing and just typed something to sound like his rage sounds, that's also not shitty. i think it's probably this last one, maybe combined with having seen it as a common way of writing out rage sounds.

on sims: i hope dil is pregnant bc alien babies are cool and maybe deppy would be less mean to him than they were to tabs. i like the bowling, bumpers are awesome, i've never seen that weird metal slide thing in my life, and i hope they really make dab and evan be friends. the freeze ray was funny bc at the end of it phil acted like it was all dan, but throughout he was encouraging it. all in all, a good sims video.
