I get that he was mocking film critics or whatever, but that doesn't make it okay. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, saying "REEEE" is a meme called "autistic screeching" that basically makes fun of autistic people and their temper tantrums. As a mentally ill person, I wouldn't appreciate people mocking my disorders. I get that he probably didn't know, but that still doesn't make it okay. Now his young and impressionable fans are just laughing along. I don't think this should just be blown off.
I mentioned this a few pages back, but I really don't think he was using that meme. There's no way he would risk the potential audience backlash, he's not an idiot - Dan know's his audience and knows a majority of his fans wouldn't approve.
I think he was just using a casual noise of anger or frustration, like when people type "AAAAAA" or "RRRRRR" when finishing a sentence. It just reminded me of his re-branding video when he pushed the scissors towards his eyes out of annoyance.
i want to add to this as someone on the autistic spectrum.
i've never seen the "REEEE" stuff as directly talking about autistic people
specifically, but about people getting really worked up about minor things. its just that THAT is something common in autistic people, so some people wont just make fun of someone for getting mad that a franchise isnt aimed at them, theyll ALSO connect it to autism, in the same way people add sexual or racial slurs to normal insults. but as a pair d+p arent very sensitive to autistic issues, not that i'd expect they would be
pretty much all autistic characteristics are called "weird" and most of the things people find it perfectly fine to laugh at connect back to being on the autistic spectrum, allistic people just often dont acknowledge it because its hilarious to make fun of 10 year old boys who get very excited by video games or adult men who are involved in hobbies people find childlike and who dont have very developed social skills. hilarious photos of someone wearing a strange outfit or doing something out of the ordinary in public? yeah...
phil making himself cross eyed and ~creepy~ imitating strangers he met who clearly didnt understand acceptable social interactions? literally the reason i never wanted to meet them when i was a more involved fan, i didnt want to mess up an interaction and get a video about how i was crazy.
the pair of them insisting its so WEIRD to be obsessed with things and not liking going outside, but its okayy guyzzzz because all of US are weird? autistic people are told enough that we're weird for these behaviours, it'd be better to just... like... normalise it and say "it is not weird to like a tv show", not keep the "sooooo weird!!" thing going.
basically,
most innocent things people happily make fun of are connected to the behaviours of autistic people even if the person doing it isnt themselves on the spectrum. and you kind of just have to tune it out and hope that at least if these people learn that someone was doing those things IS on the spectrum then theyd stop it
