Tbh I’m not that bothered by Dan’s ghosting. If his new project is less focused on “influencer” activities and more like a book/creative performance, he doesn’t really have a responsibility to engage with us in an influencer manner. Many creators don’t share photos and/or personal stories and that’s okay. I do think he could have communicated intentions better, but he isn’t demanding or even requesting our support rn so he doesn’t really have an “obligation” to his fans. I know a lot of people don’t agree, though.
Yeah I totally agree. I miss him terribly much, but aside from the lack of communication surrounding the subject of his vacay from social media, I didn’t really see anything wrong w him being gone (other than the fact that I miss him). I’m so excited for the future, and love that he’s more active rn

He sells a notebook?
I'm intrigued, and don't really mind if he's only taking to social media now he's got something coming out. I mean, some people would also be mad if he suddenly came out with something after being silent forever, don't ever please everyone. As long as everyone knows what he's doing/why, they can try not to be hurt by it and just check out what he's advertising if interested or move on

I don’t see or remember a book option.
Was it there for long? Also I was thinking that could be because the notebook but when you type that in only his bag pops up. No notebook.
Isn’t there a section on the homepage to help you embed photos? I don’t know how sorry

I'm very conflicted about Dan right now, I guess it's once bitten twice shy situation with him, is this just
temporary engagement and after the project drops he's back to ignoring us or is he back to regularly engaging with us again. I'm curious about the project and I want to love it but I'm not really hopeful.
I felt very weird about the photo on the one hand I'm really happy he feels confident enough to post it but after the initial shock (I actually turned my tablet off because I couldn't close Instagram fast enough lol) I still feel weird looking at it to the point have quickly scroll past the ones posted here and I've been avoiding Instagram since because I feel like I'm intruding looking at that picture, even though he posted it himself because I've been in the mindset of Dan wanting to live a private life to the point I've not gone in to analysing him being in Phil's content recently like I would have been in the past and this threw me off a bit.

I’m genuinely curious about this but when people say they are petty about Dan and his interactions during his hiatus, like what for?
Are we saying he isn’t allowed a break from social media or from the phandom? we all know how tiring the phandom can be at times, we are high maintainence so i personally don’t blame him for keeping away for a long time. He’s had years of the whole phandom being super intense and involved so if the guys needed a break then good on him I say.
I can’t wait to see what this project is. I can’t wait for Dan to be back. I have missed him but I am in no way pissed off that he needed a(imo a well deserved) break.
Seems like that rumour about a book is actually true then. Eeek!

This, but also I don't even know that I'd call it a break.
He's always gone into a cave when he was working on something. If he had a video coming we would hear from him for a week or two. He doesn't seem to be able to balance the intensity of both creating and interacting, which does make sense to me. I think it also follows that the more intense the project is and the bigger the scale (like BIG) the more time he ends up taking to work on it (six months actively writing and filming for that video).
Also, he's producing content in the year of our living hell 2020, I'm gonna just take the serotonin of both a probable impending project and also seeing his face a little more often as a win. I'm sure as hell not getting much of it anywhere else.

I don't get it either, the obsession with asking him to change his icon. I think it's cute but maybe it's just me.
He did answer, through, so...
Also all this activity from Dan is making me inevitably suspicious and excited but i'm tired of disappointment.. bc i'm always gonna be excited for anything that man does... dan please spare me pls come through

God, I hope it ain't poetry because 1. i'm a poetry hating pleb like that and 2. if his Insta poems are anything to go by I really think the world really only needs one Milk & Honey.
Also big no to a general self help book.
Gimme fiction. Or the memoirs of my dreams because I'm a nosy bitch.

I mean we’ve all been through this silence during his break 100 times and finally releasing something doesn’t erase how he went about it and how it made people feel. No need to go into the 10th discussion about it but no need to act like our feelings aren’t valid because he finally decides to interact again either.
And I get that the phandom is a lot but in a year where we saw Jenna marbles, Safiya, Sean, Thomas, Ingrid, etc. take breaks or step away for a while and communicate with their audience - every single one of them- I think it’s understandable why we’d want the same thing. Moving on though I hope he releases this soon so we can get back to Phil’s regularly scheduled content

Agreed entirely re: poetry. Pls god no.
I can't adequately convey how much and for how long I have dreamt of a memoir from Dan and/or Phil. If that's what Dan's book ended up being? I think I might actually faint from joy.
I would probably also shut down, because I'd be very unprepared for that kind of reality. How honest would he be? Would he address his life only through '09 or.... post-Phil? I don't know if I could handle it either way. But
OOF, do I want it!
So, with that being said, it'll probably be an adult coloring book for lowering stress and he's spent the last year drawing line art for it.

I would very much like a creative nonfiction book contemplating queerness.
I think some people would categorize it as self-help but I think that's being way too quick to dismiss the perspective of a person who spent twenty eight years struggling with their sexuality. I think he could actually, genuinely help people just by recounting his own story. I want 'this will absolutely work for you' and more 'here's how I coped' but that's kind of splitting hairs.
My hierarchy of things I'd be happy with are:
- fiction
- creative non-fiction
- memoir just because i don't realistically see dan sharing any truly honest version of his life because he and phil want to keep personal things private and a memoir with no mention of phil being his romantic partner wouldn't feel honest at this point
- graphic novel
- licensed and sanctioned published guild wars fanfic. yes, it's bestiality. he's living his truth, guys.
- a detailed review of his favorite queer media from the past year
- a study guide for uni students complete with seventeen companion videos in which he wears a backpack and smiles through the pain because demographics
- a piano book of his own original works
- kama sutra for gay guys with orthostatic hypotension
- a memoir but actually its in his handwriting which mean you can read one word out of every five
- a sixty thousand word expansion of his original masterpiece short, The Urge oh no shit wait i actually would read that ok pretend that's like, up the list right above graphic novel
- Becoming a Youtuber for Dummies (it's all just editing tips he got from Phil) (or better, it's all just pictures of Phil)
- a coffee table book of pigeon photography
- creative retelling of the ABCs
- just use your imagination and insert like fifty more things here
- poetry

I think that could actually be likely bc in the description of BIG he says that the video was just a starting point for his thoughts and he barely scratched the surface.
I don’t really see him writing fiction because he hasn’t expressed interest before to my knowledge, and if The Urge is an accurate representation of his fiction writing skills (it may not be!), then he isn’t a great writer. I could see creative nonfiction or memoir, though! I could also see poetry; however, I do not want poetry.

My guess is a non-fiction book mainly focused on mental health and struggling with sexuality ,without it being too personal in regards of his family or Phil but maybe from a comedic perspective hence the stand up stuff.

It's interesting to hear everyone's thoughts, I think maybe because I only really got into the fandom post BIG and never actually experienced (fairly) consistent dan/deppy in general content I don't mind it. I can understand how people are still hurt and sad over loosing something like that after having it for years though, and not knowing what to expect out of change of something that was/is a big part of your life. Artists and creators and their communities change over time and that can be a complicated and emotional process.
Maybe it's cause I'm cynical or I've been hurt before or whatever, but I always try to have a level of consciousness about the people I follow and the content I'm into. Maybe it sounds bad but I think it's healthy for me to remind myself that by liking someone and their content, I am mostly along for the ride. If I really enjoy it, if it helps me, fantastic, if it's meh that's okay and I don't have to enjoy everything and if it turns out that I'm just not enjoying someone or their work much anymore (not necessarily that it's bad but it just being not for me anymore) that's fine and while sad I can move on.
All that said, with all the evidence pointing towards book, which is something I can see Dan doing (and also being able to do since he has technically been an author of two successful books, though I definitely think this will be a lot different from that). I am, not like jump-up-and-down excited or anything but I am curious and looking forward to see what he has to say, if that makes sense. I would love to see something queer related or memoir-ish. One topic I have always wanted to hear some of Dan's in depth and reflective perspective on is growing up on the internet and gaining a large following as he did, how it affected him both positively and negatively. The nature of internet fame and notoriety is very interesting to me and I would love to hear more people in his position's thoughts on navigating that, as well as how internet culture surrounding following personalities has changed.
There's a lot of different directions you can go with something like a book. Unless he started out with a really clear goal and idea I imagine it's something he waffled around with lots of different possibilities and directions before settling for something. Idk if anyone here has read it but Sissy by Jacob Tobia is a book I really liked, it is a memoir of sorts with different stories and anecdotes from their childhood and life, centered around gender and sexuality, but touching on many different things. It is very funny and light but also touching and serious. I could see something like that. Mostly though, I'm not going to let myself think about it too hard, the less specific expectations you have, the more you can let yourself be pleasantly surprised.
Also, I know it's only been not even technically a week since the quiz show, but damn I miss Phil's face. I know everyone's like Dandandan (I am too) but I would love to get an AP video. Literally anything like it's been such a week (fellow oregonian here, can't go outside and can't even open the windows cause of the smoke and I know we're the lucky ones) my bar is so low I will take anything. I just need some silly, random, stupid shit to focus on. After Phil's delivery during the quiz of glitter strands and hand soap, I would honestly be happy to get another Things I Regret Buying. While I don't enjoy the capitalist and wastefulness vibes of them they are entertaining and I would love to know what random shit Phil buys and looks at, and what stuff like his amazon recommended look like because of it.

This. The whole "Dan's well within his right to take a break" seems very much like a strawman argument at this point? The issue people have brought up multiple times is
how he went about things (not communicating that he'd be gone for so long
except for when he's promoting something lol), not that he took a break??? lmao c'mon. Even though I'm no where near as invested as before, the argument/side of feeling slighted/hurt about
how Dan chose to disappear is still very much valid to me and it always surprises me to see how often that view gets skewed into "so Dan's not allowed a break?"
Anyway, that's interesting about the 'Book' section on his site. It's been so long since Dan's done something that I forgot how to feel excited for any project of his

But with that said, I would be most interested in something that actually has to do with him as a person--rather than a fictional piece of work.

I just hope whatever kind of book it turns out to be that Dan has a really, and I mean /really/, amazing editor. And I hope that if it is some type of "self-help" or self-help adjacent type book that his approach is nothing like his brother lmao.

I am not sure how legit the additional info on Goodreads is, but the page count is just under 300, which is around 100 more than "Milk and Honey." Also not sure if Dan's hypothetical poetry book would match Kaur's poem length or include illustrations, but judging by his insta captions, I don't think he would write enough to surpass 200 pages. "You Will Get Through This Night" doesn't seem like it'd be comedy-related, so here's my theories, from most to least plausible:
a)a collection of essays and anecdotes about sexuality and mental health, some funny, some gut-punchers a la BIG.
b)self-help book (blegh)
c)memoir, with the title being something someone (most likely Phil) said to him
d)fiction, with the title as the poignant line that the mentor/love interest/best friend says to the protagonist in the darkest hour
I'm pretty excited about the book, but the one thing that I hope is that the public judges it on his writing skill and ignores his YouTube background. I wouldn't get it just because it's written by Dan, but I already anticipate fangirls getting the book and it being popular because of who wrote it. That's actually why I think he's distancing himself from his audience a little. He seemed to really come out of II with a better understanding of how we consume DnP content and didn't like what he saw

If I had to guess, I’d bet on a autobiography where he talks in depth about his mental health and sexuality. It could be interesting if done well, I read Rose and Rosie’s book where they shared literally everything about their struggles - some of them were heavy to read - but it has always been an example of what I’ve wanted from dnp (or one of them anyway).
Also, if you search “You Will Get Through This Night” on Google, it says that book is to be expected on May, 18 2021. Don’t know how trustworthy that info is, but yeah.

Peoples feelings are very much valid I was just trying to understand what it was that was causing so many bad feelings about a dude who suffers with anxiety and his mental health and him needing to take a break.
Also you mention those other youtubers and their communication. D&P are not like other youtubers they’ve never been ones to make long winded explanations about anything. The hiatus discussion on the dapg was enough for me to realise they ain’t coming back. They don’t ever make bold statements saying “we are quitting / taking a break” because the phandom are WILD. Can you imagine what kind of melt down something like that would cause, and then being anxious already how that would impact them. I don’t blame them for not saying anything tbh, the responsibility must be way to much because the phandom is so extra.
