[offtopic]Just found myself scrolling through Bryony's Twitter and found that she's a Love Island fan. Did we ever get to hear why Dan and Phil didn't watch it this year? Non-British people be warned but it's the best damn reality show in the UK currently. Seriously, everyone from your grandmother to Stormzy was watching it so it's weird Dan and Phil didn't join in on the hype - yes, it's a predominately heterosexual show wherein people couple up, but the friendships are fire and the challenges/arguments are so funny and entertaining.[/offtopic]

Phil did start watching it and said he was obsessed with it for like a week before getting bored with it, as he said he couldn't really handle the drama of it after a while. I can't remember which liveshow he talked about it in, but I'm guessing it would have been around the time the show first started airing, and just before the UK election as I'm sure I remember Phil being a bit miffed he'd miss an episode due to Dan wanting to watch the election coverage. I'm also pretty sure it was Bryony that introduced him to it.

I swear they tell a different version of the story every time they're asked about it, it's difficult to keep up! Weird that they wouldn't just say something like "we met online through the youtube community before eventually meeting up in Manchester where we began to film videos together", instead of downplaying it as convenient by making up the bit about Dan coming there for uni. Peculiar, but I'm not really surprised, smh

That was such a good panel for people who want to hear Dan and Phil talk like adults. I really hope some of the interesting things they said don't end up overshadowed by them telling a very location/setting-appropriate version of how they met. The panel wasn't about them as people, and just judging by the pics of the line many people there weren't actually youtube fans, so I don't think there would have been any real need for them to go into the full story of how and why they met. It might be special to us but for Dan and Phil wanting to come off as professionals to a room of peers or people who just thought the panel title was interesting, it would have been extraneous detail.

yeah I agree with alittledizzy, I feel like we get so little of Dan and Phil giving us their actual thougts and opinions on 'serious' subjects like staying relevant, their income, their future, etc.. And it was so nice to have someone asking them real and relevant questions about their jobs, I really enjoyed that (tho now I'm craving a 3hours long interview where they talk about the businessy side of youtube and phil reveals all his secrets on how to be a marketing mastermind)

I think they just wanted to minimize it; for me it goes back to this interview not being about them as people, but being about their careers and the industry they work in. If I were at a work conference and someone asked me how I met my girlfriend I wouldn't say "Well, we both were super into writing Lord of the Rings erotic fanfic." I'd just say we had a mutual interest. You edit the story to fit the audience. They edited it in a way to evoke as few questions as possible, since that wasn't what they were there to talk about. I feel like most people, even researchers, would understand that.

It definitely sounds interesting, I struggle to watch panels as for some reason I can't handle the thought that there's a live audience there (some weird kind of secondhand embarrassment maybe?) but I'm looking forward to all the gifs that hopefully people will make.

I agree with you that hopefully the rest of the interview won't be overshadowed by this as it's hardly a huge deal, and also that this panel wasn't aimed at their usual audience but moreso at industry professionals. I still stand by though that it's possible for them to tell the truth in such a way that is appropriate in this context - saying they became friends online before deciding to meet up and make videos is hardly explicit, and it is more truthful than implying they only met because Dan was going to Manchester for uni.

That was SO enjoyable. Afterwards, I hugged them both and Dan said to me "hi again, thanks for coming up here to see us" (lol oops) and I told them both well done for the talk and that it was really interesting and I'd really enjoyed it and they thanked me.

I really enjoyed Dan's answer about vloggers getting bad press, like Zoella. He was so articulate and well spoken, he really got into his flow at this talk and it was a joy to listen to him clearly speaking his mind, feeling relaxed with Sue and getting into his stride; he was fully on. Phil was also exceptionally relaxed I thought, sometimes I feel like he answers things "correctly" but not very personably, and he really came across well today. All In all, I so enjoyed it.



Also, afterwards I was waiting for flarequake to come out of the loo and they walked past me with Marianne, she nodded at me and I nodded back but didn't really react much since the guys recognise me I guess and I'm not interested in causing a fuss. But I texted the observation below to our WhatsApp group and thought people might be interested:

Thank you for that post, human! Your picture turned out amazing, and I love your description of it/them. The periscope stream I watched wasn't top quality but I also got the impression that Phil seemed more relaxed than normal, so it's definitely nice to see that confirmed. I think they had a lot of trust in Sue not to go past boundaries they set.

I watched the interview on periscope, they seemed a bit nervous to me in the beginning always reaching for their glasses of water, but they got better later on.

I think this is the first time Phil said his age and that little joke he made about being scared people would stop watching his videos on his birthday was interesting, i wonder if he really did feel a bit scared (the phandom were making such a big deal). But he has a great attitude about it, and about about making videos and doing what he likes .

It was a really great interview.

Your picture is amazing! You all look SO lovely and your description of Dan just made my heart flutter (even though at first I thought you were talking about Phil because that's just how I see him, my poor Phil-girl heart lmao)

That talk was so interesting and relaxed, I really really enjoyed! I adore Sue, I'm such a fan of GBBO and I knew she would be a good choice and I'm glad I was right. She seemed interested and professional and in tune enough with them, and they seemed very into the conversation. One of the things that stood out to me the most was how much Phil actually talked, he went with his bubbly personality and cute answers sometimes but most of it kept it very professional and I had this distinct feeling at one point when Dan was listening to him talk that Phil more often than not must have the lead of the business side of things. It was just really good to watch.

I love how Dan talked about bad reputation of vloggers and brought up Zoe and talked about the whole thing in a defensive but polite way. It's true what he said - you can't help what the majority of people like,there's a reason why something is popular, that doesn't mean that a)there isn't quality behind it and b)there is still such a huge amount of differnt content out there and you just have to find it. If you don't, you just didn't look deep enough, that's how the internet works.

All in all, I can't wait for them to upload the actual video because the periscope was super useful but gave me a headache :mrgreen:

Ps: they were extremely pretty, I love Dan's outfit but I was once again struck by how BROAD Phil's shoulders are. Like..how?? Why do they look broader than Dan's when he's taller? What is this sorcery? Why do I have such a school-girl crush on Phil, I'm an adult

I love how deep Phil's voice was in the panel! They both looked so good! I didn't like that zipper dan shirt at vidcon, but I like it with the jacket over. As others have said, it was great to see a more adult panel with no screaming audience. Interesting how their answer to how they will stay relevant was just to keep doing what they're doing. I wonder if they actually have more of a plan but they don't want to share it. I do want them to keep doing what they're doing, but I kind of want them to try other things.

Still don't understand people making a big deal about how they explained how they met. They both gave more or less accurate versions of their career paths as youtubers - they just omitted the details that overlapped with their personal backstory/relationship to each other. The interview was so impersonal that there wasn't even any mention of them living together, nothing about their lives save their jobs was relevant to it. Contextually, the way the explained things fit the situation they were in.

This panel wasn't about them, you can't even really compare it to other interviews they did because this wasn't an interview. It was Dan and Phil discussing their stance as professional youtubers and their opinions about the television industry.

It was a video of snippets from the TATINOF documentary and bits of older videos I think. Phil actually buried his face in his hands when they showed a bit of his first video and Dan blushed as usual about hello internet. Very cute.

The baking video one was the best one, the whole room responded so well and I felt like afterwards, the people in the room who had no idea who they were at the start now suddenly adored them. I also enjoyed that the boys were watching the videos in the monitors at the front of the stage and laughing along, so cute.

not gonna lie, I might have stared more at Sue than actual deppy. she's just an icon.

The panel really was so nice. I was so tense at times though, always hoping they leave a good impression on those business people, idek why I felt so nervous sometimes i was hiding behind my hands when i thought they might have been too brash or whatever. but they did soooo great, such professionals. I loved how passionate they came across about what they do. They might not have always given the most considerate answers, but I think they for sure left the impression that they are really, really passionate about their kind of content creation and what they do. It made me feel proud!

re: origin story: omg it didn't even occur to me that that would be something people talk about it felt natural to me when i watched it. there's details about my relationship i don't always share immediately with some/most people, because i know things get judged a certain way. it made sense in this situation to skip a bit on the details of having met online first, because older people might not get that as well or judge them differently for it. that's just sensible adaptation to different audiences.

someone pointed out that they had to put a lot of trust in sue to respect their boundaries.
i think it worked well because she's a queer person who got outed against her will, and i assume knows perfectly well how to not make someone talk about something they don't want to share with that audience.
i kind of kept smiling at those three queer people living their best successful life up there, i know it's small, but those things sometimes feel so valuable to me
