Ok so you're gonna have to bear with me guys bc I don't quite know how to word this well, and like no one else has mentioned this that I've seen so maybe it's just me! But I mean this is how I read the video and maybe someone else did too so I might as well share my thoughts on it.
I reached a point in the video where it was just like... I'm not entirely sure what they were supposed to be mocking anymore?
Specifically when they got to the "If someone finds out a person used to be emo they could lose their job, their friends, or even the love of their family" part. It...idk it felt like mocking coming out. And like obviously that would not be what they were trying to do, (especially dan I mean we know he generally is cautious about this stuff) but its just I can't read that sentence as not blatantly parroting how people often talk about how lgbt people can lose their jobs and friends and be kicked out by their family if they come out and aren't accepted. And just idk, the people throwing rocks part too? People throwing rocks has a pretty vivid connotation to stoning for me idk.
I mean the part where they roasted Phil was hilarious I loved that section of the video but as a whole I just feel like they used a joke that probably was supposed to be a play off of kinkshaming and just missed that tone. Were they trying to mock people who claim discrimination over something like being shamed for kinks? Probably. Did it come across to me as more of mocking people who speak out about the real world injustices they face? It sucks but... yeah. To me it did.
Idk again I probably worded this oddly and it might be just me and again I'll repeat that I highly highly HIGHLY doubt Dan actually meant in any way to mock homophobia like god I think that's the last thing he'd do rn, but the joke fell flat to me. So all in all not my fav video lmao ah well
Edit: Oh shit oh no top of the page Sorry my negativity is on top wHOOPS

That part threw me off too. I live in a state where you literally can be fired or denied housing bc of your sexuality. I know he and Anthony are very sensitive to those issues, but maybe being from Cali and the UK, they didn't think about all of the places in between?adonais wrote:

^ idk I had an entire can of red bull thrown at me FROM A MOVING CAR for being an emo in like 2010.
Its meant to be satirical, he's not mocking homophobia so much as he is being hyperbolic. Obviously none of that happens, its more shading themselves than mocking homophobia. Less them being insensitive arseholes, more them being satirical little shits going to extremes for comedic effect.

I saw some other people vaguely mentioning getting a feeling like this and I have to admit that after the first watch I didn't catch the parts that could have been interpreted as distasteful, but I think your explanation is very good, adonais. I think of Dan as always coming off as mocking no matter what he does, but you're right by seeming like mocking people who might suffer from real discrimination or fear is very ehhh. And the throwing rocks/stoning thing....yikes I did not notice that at all the first time around but now I feel not so great about that.adonais wrote: Specifically when they got to the "If someone finds out a person used to be emo they could lose their job, their friends, or even the love of their family" part. So yeah, I think he does have a mocking tone, and he's probably trying to just mock himself, but I completely agree that it can come across as mocking anyone who has suffered from real world discrimination. I feel like he unfortunately did not think this through. Thanks for your great explanation though, because I feel like while I could feel that something about this vid was bugging me I knew I was missing the big picture before.

I let that part go when I saw it, it bothered me, though, because I worry about what I've said online about mental health, as well as my gaps in work. I was surprised they crossed that line, I doubt they really needed it for the humour to work. Dan has said before that someone threw rocks at him, tbh I didn't liken it to actually stoning people, idk tbh.

That is true, I remember that now! I think it was all true stories, and maybe interpretations of it coming off as mocking can be attributed to the fact that I think Dan's tone of voice often sounds sort of mocking/condescending, even when it's a not a situation where he could mean it to be. And Dan's sort of dramatic/over-the-top comedy style doesn't leave a lot of room for him to show sensitivities. Which can be totally fine, but is not everyone's cup of tea.sarmstr2 wrote:Hasn't Dan actually shared the story about getting rocks thrown at him during his emo phase? At first I was like "lol Dan really is Phil Trash #1" but then I remembered Dan calling the ladybird photo cringe.998274 wrote:Leave it to Dan to choose the most flattering pictures of Phil on the internet, while Phil chose the worst ones of Dan for his video).

Why does this scream MARRIED to me? Like, what is about this lovely dragging that screams "yes this human is not only my best friend but also my partner love of my life and I want to brag about being the only one that can drag him because i'm sure of our strong relationship and I know he loves it"?fondsmiles wrote:he's very adamant about this dragging thing isn't he (I love it, it's funny af)

Ah yup I do remember now about the rock story! But I think that maybe while alone that story would be fine, or if it were paired with some playful "*record scratch* 'its true. That actually happened to me- rocks. For a t-shirt.' It would be fine- it's the fact that it was followed with the other job/friends/family comment that gave it the wrong context and came across as insensitive instead of funny to me. Not everyone who watches will have watched the live show and know that the rock story was a legitimate thing. I mean I've been in this community and have been watching live shows and videos for years and even I forgot that was a thing that happened.
But again, I know it wouldn't have been an intentional connotation. I just think maybe as whole it wasn't thought through enough as to how it would come across to the people in the audience who either aren't aware of how the emo subculture was treated or were aware of that live show story.

I didn't like Dan's video either and I'm, quite frankly, surprised at how many people seem to really like it I'm not saying it's objectively bad, I'm just genuinely surprised. I've watched it twice, just to be sure, the first time I was cringing so hard I could barely make it through the end... Basically, what adonais said (I bolded the parts I 100% agree with, thank you for articulating my thoughts for me )
Maybe it's because I haven't had an emo phase and it's not in any way #relatable to me Also, confession time, I don't like Anthony, I wasn't into Smosh, no opinion, just never watched them, then, after Anthony's leaving and all the collabs, I tried watching his individual content, but he seems bland and somehow fake to me, sorry. Personally, I will be happy not to have any more collabs with him from both Dan and Phil. genuinely interested in what could be Anthony's appeal if you don't count his appearance which doesn't do anything for meadonais wrote:Ok so you're gonna have to bear with me guys bc I don't quite know how to word this well, and like no one else has mentioned this that I've seen so maybe it's just me! Dan wants to be understood. Phil just wants to make the viewer smile and sell some backpacks (c) fancybum
Maybe it's a bit mocking, but I also think that there's a point to it. The Emo kids were bullied, mocked, and dragged online and in real life when I was in high school. Now, MCR Panic at the disco, skinny jeans, etc are mainstream. People aren't bullied for those things anymore.
It's a nice thing to see how things can change over time. People are bullied for different reasons now, but hopefully, those reasons won't be a problem in the future.
(idk if this even has anything to do with the conversation, but I just thought I chime in...)

Wow I was totally NOT expecting this new video! Pleasantly surprised!
I loved it. But then again I am really (really, unironically) liking all of Dan's videos lately and this one is no exception. I must admit I didn't have an emo phase per se, but I did listen to all the so-called emo bands, I just didn't dress all black and wore eyeliner, etc (though I did paint my nails black once... and regretted it). So I didn't relate that much to the video, but I still enjoyed it.
Of course almost pissed myself laughing (ew) at these two dragging Phil to the ground.
My mind still can't comprehend that Anthony and the boys are doing collabs together; it's so weird to go through a phase of stanning Anthony (and by extension, Smosh), finding D&P through them, now obviously obsessed with Dan and Phil and now they are making collabs with Anthony? This is still so weird, but really amazing!
don't mind me just having a moment over here please carry on

Hi! Delurking for a minute because I was wondering: do you think it could be Dan playing the piano in the background of the video and at the end? I don't know any "emo music" (sorry if it's offensive I mean MCR and those bands, I've never listened to them), so I might be wrong and it's a very famous music. What do you guys think? It would be so cool if Dan actually did his music now!
Or maybe he's done it before and it's already been discussed, in that case sorry I didn't take the time to check.
Also I really liked this surprise video, it really made me laugh even though I was never emo nor did I knew emo kids (seems it wasn't a thing at my school)
Back to lurking bye
EDIT : okay sorry I was completely wrong it's written in the description - that's another reason you should always read them.

I don't think anything was meant by it. It did catch me off guard for a split second though.
This video speaks to me. My teenage emo self rising from the depths of the noughties.
So much of it is true though, that note always reminds me of MCR. I think I played that "to join the black parade moment" at least 5 times I laughed so much.
Sad the rock story is true but unsurprised tbh. I remember having food thrown at me and having my backpack destroyed for being emo. Still I have some fond memories and sometimes like in this video i get the urge to dance to some of the music or I wear something from old that phase.
I really like how well D&P work with Anthony, they've obviously enjoyed making these videos and if they wanted to team up again in the future I wouldn't be opposed
I do love that Dan was given the opportunity to roast Phil and put selfies as embarrassing as the ones Phil showed of him and he failed so badly. Those had to be some of the nicest photos of Phil on the internet.
Dan tries so hard to mock him but he is truly Phil Trash #1

This is the first Dan videos I've watched in almost a year, and wow, that was pretty disappointing. Not because I felt it was mocking anything, but because most of the jokes seemed really overdone and stale (or the video is just long overdue - would have been better in 2011 ). Maybe they were afraid their audience wouldn't get the jokes if they expanded past the cliche emo jokes.
I did like the reference to FFTL, they need more recognition for their place in emo history even though they were never as mainstream and sizzled slowly out of existence for awhile. That part pleasantly surprised me at least (still wasn't super funny though).
Also, I like Anthony's new channel. He's funnier than I remember.
This post seems so negative. what's gone on since I've been away?
