I was scrolling through the comments on the vid the other day and I couldn't help but be curious : There didn't seem to be any comments regarding Shawna's stance on gay marriage. Now perhaps this is just us "agreeing to live and let live ", "taking the moral high ground" you know, but let's be real... Ever since Shawna had started deleting comments below her own vid, I had wondered how P would deal with the inevitable backlash in his comment section . Whether he would allow us to say whatever or whether he would perhaps go as far as disabling comments. Ok disabling comments would have drawn too much attention...but is it possible he censored the comment section ?

Regarding the part that I bolded - I wasn't following her videos (don't want to give her views and honestly don't care so much about Phil's anime opinions) - what kind of comments was she deleting? Those calling her out for being against same-sex marriage, or other things too?

Not sure tbh, I just got info trickling down through the grapevine. People said she was removing any comments challenging her moral views, but what those entail and to what extent i'm not sure

as far as i know it's very easy to blacklist certain words and if someone comments with those words then the comment simply doesn't show up. the person doesn't get notified or anything. for example when connor franta and troye sivan broke up connor blacklisted troye's name so now if you try to comment on his videos with troye's name it wont show up. (at least that was still the case when he was promoting his book a few months ago).

phil's video is currently #10 on trending. bless him, maybe he'll get himself a permanent contract with tinder but with some of you commenting that it might be a step on the way of some change in content or tone on his channel it sounds like a positive signal to me.
i was actually wondering whether the title + description (paid promotion for tinder) would lure in viewers due to the possible implication that he'd be talking about more recent dating activities? or the shock value that it's phil of all people who's promoting tinder? but idk if that's the case, it only occured to me to check the comment section and there seem to be mostly people finding it funny that tinder chose phil to do that, being amazed that phil was a fuckboy, commenting on funny parts, and some rare honorable jealous!dan and innocent anglebean!phil mentions.

Yes you can blacklist comments on youtube videos, for example the word "phan" is blacklisted on all of d&p's videos, and there are auto filters for spam and profanity. Like ArtyJim said, comments caught by the filters disappear from public view(although the original poster can still see them).
The only way for you to tell your comment was deleted is to go back to it and see it missing.

and to answer the question, phil did delete comments about shawna's views. i know when i went to watch his part of their collab , there were comments where people were saying something like "my previous comment got deleted, but jsyk..." and telling ppl about shawna's opinions.

[offtopic]a beard is a "girlfriend" or "boyfriend" of a closeted gay person. for example, the poet WH Auden (a gay man) and the actress/writer Erika Mann (a lesbian) were beards to each other.

Thus, a "beardroom" would a room used to throw off implications of homosexuality.[/offtopic]

if I remember correctly i saw someone on here saying a while back that they have blacklisted "phan" from their youtube comments. because I had the same thought, maybe he just blacklisted the word gay to avoid questions about his sexuality? I went to one on his videos and left one comment with phan in it, and another one with gay, and both showed up after I posted them, i don't know how that works though, and if they're deleted later or whatever.

thanks malday and ArtyJim for the explanation. a possibly redundant follow-up question: how would you know your comment was deleted by going back to the video? i genuinely don't understand how yt sorts the comment section, to me it always seems like something that's the top comment one day doesn't show up the other even though it had more likes, etc.. so if i commented on a video, how would i know if it's really gone or just moved so far down that i don't find it anymore?

i think dan's being involuntarily relatable with his twitter icon. seeing that someone snapped a photo of you which you actually happen to like for once and getting the irrational impulse to change every single profile picture, your passport, and the picture frame at your grandma's house to it? can relate. dan's just following through with it.

i don't like the term "beardroom" bc when my ex and i both came out, ppl assumed our whole relationship was fake and we were beards for each other, which wasn't true. but that's a dumb personal thing.
more importantly i don't think separate rooms implies not being together, so the idea that its purpose is to hide the relationship is to me

In regards to my previous post. Just pre-emptively clarifying that I'm merely curious - of course it's Phil's youtube channel and he can do with it as he pleases. He's free to delete and block whatever puts him in an uncomfortable position. And since Shawna was his guest I suppose he feels a responsibility to shield her from negativity. It must just be a rather awkward position to find himself in as Shawna's opinions seem to condemn everything that Phil is. Luckily we are all champion compartementalizers

I find the current discussion about the censorship very interesting - I have to admit that it never came to my mind that they're blacklisting is that even a functional verb some words. Some people said that "Phan" is blocked - but I'm pretty sure I've seen the word in the comment section before? Though it might have been on older videos. Does the censoring apply to the individual videos, or to the whole channel?
