Yet Phil visits Florida (with its own brand of weirdness) regularly. Anyway, truckers and cab drivers are hardly representative of American society. They tend to be the least educated / enlightened demographic - probably in any society. Drawing generalizations from these limited and random encounters would be a mistake, but can be the source for amusing anecdotes.
true. as the original person to bring it up, I just want to say I don't actually think dan and phil judge all americans based on two encounters out of literal thousands. on the contrary, I think they meet the basic level of intelligence required to understand exactly what you pointed out,
uglyamerican, and that they were interacting with less educated/non-representative population samples.
also, as an american who has interacted with americans who know very little about world geography, i think this tweet might be a bit out of context. my guess is that most likely the taxi driver knew that london is not in france (at the very least, phil's accent does not sound like a french accent), but just clumped all of europe as being in close proximity to one another, which prompted his remark. knowing that london is in england and that england and france are two separate countries is
very basic, even for the more ignorant americans, and it is on a whole other level than trying to identify exactly where on a map one or the other is.
