Ok, so it's a good thing it's spooky week because not only am I now deceased, but I am also fucking living for this video. My god, that was wonderful in 900 different ways.

Re Sammy Paul, Jack Howard et al a while ago there was a thing on a YouTube magazine site or maybe Twitter about the worst thing a youtuber's been asked and Jack and Dean were holding up a sign saying "where are Dan and Phil?" I think it's less Dan and Phil they don't like, more the phandom being annoying. I can understand Sammy being put out the Boncas people nominate him or his film without inviting him, though he or his management should email them rather than tweet them. Same with the Zelda/Dan and Phil tshirt tweet (probably Dil's heart tshirt, it looks like losing lives like in Zelda). Vidfest at MCM comic con is a staple for a bunch of them who make films and web series as well as vloggers, they'll have plenty of fun together without needing to snipe at a Deppy fan. Far less inclined to go watch his other films now.

The video was lovely and it shows (once again) that they have a pretty amazing interpersonal dynamic. They're funny, they're sweet, we love them for it. The baking vids are a great format to just bant about and you can see that the touring made them even better at working together.

Yup, i do think when they shoot a youtube video they basically consider it to be work. Which doesn't mean that it's void of real feelings or that we can't catch glimpses of how they act when they are just on their own. It does mean, imo, that it's a very bad idea to try figure out what their actual relationship is on the basis of anything that they select to show you in their uploaded youtube vids. You get directed, and you can't even know how exactly it's happening.
Before I try to read the tea leaves in their jokes and love stares I try to keep some stuff in mind (just trying btw , not saying i'm good at it ).

They're trying to make a video that's funny and well liked and broadly follows the previous halloween baking vids.

They likely have a loose script or at the very least made notes and talked about the video.

They are aware of the professional camera that's aimed at them (hi mr. camera reflection ) and you can clearly see they are conscious of the effect of certain angles and close ups on their audience ( "give the public what it wants Phil").

Similarly, I think they are aware that a large chunk of their audience loves it when they act flirty and endearing towards each other and eat up the dirty jokes. I know I do.
I mean, some people basically shouted at them to fuck on stage. All the TATINOF tours must have made it even more obvious to them that they have a huge 'phandom' who would like them to act consistent with the idea that they are a gay couple, regardless of whether they are or aren't They're not .

Every shot get carefully edited, you can see how Dan edited it and he occasionally zooms in on facial expressions. When you think about that, it seems very unlikely that they would leave in stuff that 'reveals' stuff they don't want us to know. He's seen every love stare and awkward joke you have and sometimes edits it for greater impact, sometimes edits it out. If they really are a couple in the closet who are bent on keeping it a secret, it makes absolutely no sense that they make these sort of video's and leave in all the intimate glances.. Literally any sort of other content would be better.

When I look at a facebook page of a good friend, i'm not assuming I get an accurate view of what's going on in his/her life. When it comes to Dan and Phil i think the reality of the situation is we know little to nothing about them. If you leave out the social media - the medium they used and that made their entertainment career- what source of information is left really? All we have is what they, as professional entertainers, want to show us through these manipulated channels. I'm not using 'manipulated' in a pejorative way here, i just think it reflects how these media are used: to communicate and selectively share to an audience of millions in a way you want to as an entertainer.

Whoops this all got horribly long. Just saying this in support of my view that i don't think we can point to any sort of still frame and reasonably try to argue that they must really be a couple or that they will live together.
They're good friends, so even if everything is 100 % authentic there's nothing in the fondness of Phil for Dan that must necessarily imply that they are in a romantic relationship.

I watched the baking vid again first thing in the morning and it just made me smile and get up with a good feeling. For me, that's the important part.

I had a bad day yesterday and I was about to go to bed (where I totally wasn't the whole day anyway), when the notification popped up When they said "I hope you're all having the worst day ever" and "I hope you cried today", I was like, fuck you, you are supposed to cheer me up But they redeemed themselves.

I don't even know what that video was. It was messy. It seemed fanservicey and genuine at the same time (either they are together, or they actually behave like this around each other because otherwise that's just ). It was cute and I think we saw a bit of rebranding from both of them. Or they just had a particularly great day (who knows what they've been up to before filming, if you catch my drift...). It was filled with so much energy, I just loved it. I can't wait to rewatch it soon.

My favourite baking video is still the Easter baking one, this one was amazing, but I just felt like too much was happening for it to be my favourite one, if that makes sense. I'm not making any sense today, sorry.

"Dr. Oetker, more like marry me now" Well, Philly, the headquarters are in the city I was born in and my friend's mother works there. I couldn't arrange a marriage (the founder is dead anyway), but I'm pretty sure I could arrange a little tour Including eating some of the food of course. You can bring Dan, if you want. Sorry...

I understand what you are trying to say here. That everything is controlled and that looking at an isolated moments doesn't really reveal anything. And I agree BUT. For me personally, the reason why I think that they are together has little to do with ''cute moments and flirty bants'' but more to do with the bigger picture and often the moments they DIDN'T show makes it even more clear to me. But this is an endless loop what I really find confusing though is this:

Friends but ultimately bitter and jealous that they can't imitate the genuine relationship Deppy have with their audience and the success they experience.

WHAT IS THIS VIDEO HELP I like the discussion and that nobody seems to understand what's going on, but everyone's enjoying it

First of all, as it's already been said, didn't Phil, like, tell us there would be a Christmas baking video this year rather than a Halloween one? Why did they change that decision, was it because of the not so positive reaction to the spooky week? They did say that DanAndPhilBAKES would be more successful than their gaming channel... So many questions! (what's the general consensus in the larger phandom about the spooky week this year, by the way?) I even rewatched Phil's last ls, he was wearing the same shirt, but nothing gave away that there would be a baking video, those sneaky bastards!

Anyway. I loved how Deppy didn't even explain Phil's presence this time with him being an assistant or something, it just goes without saying (remember those "we are not a duo" times? me neither) After watching the video several times, I honestly still don't know how to feel about it. From my comfortable place in a trashcan, I really love it. But, as akui said, it looks very strange after the (sorry) bus tour and (very, very sorry) TATINOF fanfiction debacle. On my first watch, I felt like it was very fanservicey, of an insulting variety even (the nipple thing, Dan, WHY and "That's what you subscribed for", honestly), up until "Yes we are adults" at 8:35 and the reference fest that followed. Because after that, Deppy continued to make innnuendos, but at the same time, I don't really know how to express it, they were so giddy and happy, and Dan was acting like it's 2010, and there was no reaction at all after "I want your ass", and... I'm still confused? Basically, what mango said about Dan's ls today, but I actually look forward to it 'cause I want a reaction from him, anything will do at this rate (it reminds me of a fanfic where decide to come out without making a fuss and being big on PDA, but they can't because people have been conditioned to view all their interactions as being good friends). And if it's fanservice, I want him to tell me it's fanservice.

well if we believe the stove clock thingy (mandatory 'english isn't my first language' disclaimer) that they show half way through the video they were filming it at 4:30am, i would've drank at least 3 cups of coffee if i was going to film something that late

and honestly i just wow, i have no words for this video, i watched it last night and went to bed right afterwards feeling very confused but pleased, woke up this morning being like 'okay i was tired and ill it was probably not that sexual let's watch it again' and nope, it really was that sexual, amazing

honestly what shocks me the more is that they managed to also be so cute at the same time, how does that work, i hate them

I wasn't asked but I will offer my five cents anyway.

I don't always find them cute. Sometimes it gets too much. In fact, the moment I found out about Tatinof fanficton section, I felt sick to my sTomah and almost unstanned then and there.

But the reason I can usually stomach them and follow somewhat closely is the fact that the very reason I am so interested in them is their marketing, branding, audience manipulation, what have you. That is literally my primary interest (see signature). Having somewhat unusual moral boundaries helps

Of course, there are limits. I *had to* transfer myself unto Dan-is-not-straight camp earlier this year because otherwise (a) his recent attraction mentions would have been on level of queerbaiting I couldn't stand for and (b) I would be doing my own community a disservice.


In completely unrelated news, my girlfriend who is only casually into Deppy but very serious about cooking is live reporting her viewing of the vid to me and her outrage over their incompetence is hilarious

here we go the "are they gay discussion" i'm contributing this time since the subject of queer baiting is brought up. queer baiting as a concept is disgusting it trivializes being gay as something to be exploited or used it is simply put awful. (Yes i would think less if them if they are just queer baiting)

I would think less of them if I found out they drowned kittens for fun. If I found out they went to retirement homes and punched the residents in the face. Lots of irrelevant terrible things that I have no reason to believe they partake in, if I found out they were doing them, would make me think less of them. What even is the practical purpose of such disclaimers? When will we all come to a point where a nice video where they're happy and fun and genuine can just be seen for what it is? We're taking a video and warping it to the agenda of all sides, meanwhile Dan & Phil are just messing around in their kitchen. It must get exhausting being so cynical.

Yet it took until 2016 for somebody to think 'fine I guess Dan could be not straight'. So.
The mind truly boggles sometimes.

Personally I don't find it shipbaity or queerbaity or whateverbaity, I think the most "baity" thing they've EVER done was the fanfiction in TATINOF. The only part of this video that is even remotely "baity" is the "not yet" that Dan apparently said in relation to licking Phil, although on both watches I didn't notice/hear it, so it's not presented as in your face/a big deal. (does anyone have a timestamp??) I think people are getting the presence of innuendos and "baiting" mixed up. I would normally say [if I was trying to claim they were baiting] that Phil feeding Dan the peanut butter and Dan zooming in on Phil licking is baiting, but that's not new or surprising for a deppy baking video, so I don't know where this baiting discussion is really coming from. If this is baiting, what is all their other baking videos?
