Like, how detached can you get from defending your own rights and supporting your community, especially as a cis white (rich) gay? It’s not “controversial” or particularly “political”, it’s pretty basic stuff, it’s paying respect to people who gave their lives for your cushy lifestyle today.
Coming out to his audience after becoming a millionaire off teasing from the closet for a decade was nice & positive, but at this point the bare minimum.
Then not taking part in pride a few days later, while releasing merch in the meantime and profiting again off the wave of attention after coming out? a joke. People like Sam fucking Smith of insane international fame were there today. We gay men with a conscience simply have to do so. much. more. No excuses.

So there’s lots of problems I have with this, namely that people can and should be able to celebrate pride however the heck they want - but also, who are you to decide why Phil didn’t go? You’re basing all of this on pure speculation and it’s actually pretty gross.

Excuse me, did you say "an excuse or an explanation"? Did i read this right? Phil does not owe anyone an explanation about whether he was or was not at Pride. Pride in particular is an experience and not everyone can or wants to participate. And also: You don't know anything about what he's doing in private to help the community. For all we know he gives money to charity on a regular basis.
Also please, he did not tease his audience. His love story was basically made public against his will ffs, the guy was outed all over the internet.

I would LOVE to see him go to a pride party/club/block party whatever london pride has!!! If he doesn't go to a party I will be sad but I will support his decision. The pride parade and nightlife parties go hand in hand so I hope dan lives it up and goes to a party!!

The real world is my boyfriend getting attacked a few nights ago just for being queer. In fact, the only reason I’m posting again is because I’m waiting on a friend to pick me up and go visit him at his family home where he’s being looked after. Real gay life is not cute outfits and glitter. Which is why we march in the first place.

So excuse me if taking distance from the phandom has made me realise I don’t have to constantly justify or gloss over everything dan and phil do.
I’d be happy to hear what actually happened with Phil and why he’s been silent about pride so far today. I’m not doubting he has good intentions, just that it’s not nearly enough.
Hearing from him instead of vaguely liking tweets would be a nice start.
But until proven otherwise I maintain my idea that if a gay man (or men, dan did it too) can profit after coming out, he can take a half hour of his day to support the people who get attacked, who died of aids, who get murdered and disappeared, who live in fear, in poverty, in shame, who can’t afford or be afforded healthcare and kill themselves.
Celebrating pride, yeah, it’s personal... for regular people. Although I will always see it equally as a protest (or more so) than just a celebration. But a recently public white affluent cis gay man who’s been privately out for a decade, with millions of followers? I’m sorry, Philly, you have a responsibility. Own up to it.
Dan, silly placard or not, at least owned up. It’s not a choice anymore for privileged queers to stay out of the most basic displays of support and honour towards those queer trailblazers to whom we owe everything. And if anyone has a valid excuse not to do it should be the man himself, not his fans.

Um... I do not think having a joke on a sign while you march in a coalition with Black and Trans group is in any way not acceptable. Humor is an important part of all revolutions, particularly for getting the oppressed group's message out - and SHOWING UP and supporting marginalized groups with his privilege as a cis white rich dude is the most important work dan can do. He has been supporting trans* rights since before he was out on twitter. He may do a charity pride merch collection next year.

The dude has been out for 3 weeks, FFS, after 10 years in a very public glass closet and 16 years of dealing with bullying, IRL and online, about his sexuality. His coming out was covered on worldwide media - most people's are at most circulated on a group chat or facebook. His story, including recognition of how far we have to go, was viewed by over 8 million people. Have some freaking empathy.

Celebration, being over the top, and gallows humor have ALWAYS been part of the queer community. If you need some education on how the queer community has been uniting using glitter, humor, sass, and a lot of style for over 40+ years, I recommend watching Paris is Burning about the ballroom community (or Pose, the new series about it).

Being upset about Dan's sign when he's literally the celebrity guest at a trans*/black solidarity march is ridiculous when many other queer youtubers (Lilly Singh, Anna Akana) that recently came out literally just got drunk at pride and dressed as their best slutty selves (also an acceptable way to celebrate pride).

I'm sorry, Phil does not owe you an appearance at a parade, and Dan is not required to leave humor at the door to fight the fights we have.

Oh come on. I felt so dirty just reading that I needed to take a shower to come back clear headed enough to write a sensible reply. This is probably still not sensible but whatever.

Have you ever done something 100% of what you’ve got and still people say “that’s not good enough coz others are still dying WE NEED YOU AT 200%”??? that’s the reason why no one wants to do anything at all!

There might be a million other reasons why one just CAN’T be there in person, and they’re not obligated at all to tell you the exact reason. Sure I’d love to see phil’s face there but hey I couldn’t be there myself so should I hate myself too?

I’m starting to think this is EXACTLY why they might not have wanted to come out in the first place. The EXPECTATIONS are so high and so impossible to fulfill it’s just so doubtful if it’s even worth it.

I'm so overwhelmed. I'm so unbelievably happy for Dan. He deserves all the happiness in the world and I'm so proud of him because I know how much of a big step this is for him!
As for Phil, I'm a little shocked he's not at pride, especially since we're post-coming out video, but at the end of the day it's his choice and I don't think it's that big of a deal or means anything significant. I think that going to this was a lot more meaningful to Dan as oppose to Phil because of how much he's gone through in terms of self-acceptance anyway. I also don't think he owes anyone an explanation or an excuse or anything for not going. How someone chooses to express their sexuality is their choice and nobody is entitled to trying to change that.

I'm sorry, I had to change my avatar because it was the same picture as phanfckingtastic and I did not want to be in any way associated with her very negative view of Phil. Because I am incredibly proud of Phil and how he has behaved in the past years and weeks.
He was out to people he wanted to be out to. He is supportive in his own way. He doesn't owe anyone any parade appearances. If you feel like you wasted money or time on him I'm afraid that that is on you, I hope your day improves and you can see like a bit more positively.

I just want to comment on this because I don’t want you to feel like you’re not being heard when I can see you’re clearly hurting right now. I’m so sorry this happened to your boyfriend. I really am. It’s horrible that this could happen to anyone and I hope he’ll be okay.


As for the rest of it, I think others have covered it off quite well in their responses. It can be easy to be upset at a person in a prominent position for not doing what you’d like them to do, but we don’t know why he didn’t and I would like to think that would be respected regardless of who that person is. Not every lgbtq+ person is ready and willing to get involved in pride and it doesn’t mean they’re a bad person.

I'm sorry about your boyfriend, I hope he's alright and getting the care and support he needs. And you as well.

As for the rest- there's more than one way to support the community. Not everyone is made to be an activist and the quieter, behind the scenes involvement is just as important. They're all pieces of a whole and all vital.
