The thread is slow af so I'm gonna insert my random comment in here but this bit made me laugh because Dan looks nothing like Mediterranean lmao I don't know where people see it? Although, granted, Mediterraneans are diverse too but I would've been very surprised if he had some in his DNA. I found interesting both he and Phil had some Scandinavian in their DNA - maybe some big migration movements that I never studied?
I think many British people have some Scandinavian in their DNA because Norwegians tried to invade England more than once (soz) and also had settlements in Scotland in the Middle Ages and stuff. Both Dan and Phil only have trace amounts of Scandinavian (like, about 1%, right?) which could well date back to the medieval period and the Norwegian attacks in England. But I think Dan's test thing said the Scandinavian lived in the 1800s which is really weird and doesn't make sense with him only being 1% Scandi. It either doesn't add up at all or I'm missing something.
I also think it's interesting that they both have over 10% French/German in their DNA because that has to be more recent. Is that common in England? (I'm really bad at figuring out what these percentages mean so maybe 10% French/German also just dates back the Norman invasion or something and that's why they both have it but 10%, and even 17% in Dan's case, seems so much to be from that long ago.)

Im also not sure about the percentages but I know that a sizeable population of French Huguenots emigrated to Britain in the 17th/18th centuries, so it could be from that? (My dad has done his family tree back about 350 years and we were also Huguenot refugees back in the day)
First post, but I really enjoyed this video, I love all that DNA stuff and would love to get one done some day (when I have money). Im also researching Neanderthals atm, so I would be interested to know if Dan had more Neanderthal DNA than the average European person (since Europeans/Asians are pretty much the only ones likely to have it).

I'm new here so idk how to do quoting at all but a lot of British people have German and French ancestors as a result of Britain's history. I'm not sure what dates were in the video for Dan's French and German DNA but the original Britons who settled in Britain were Celts, who came from the general Germany area around the Iron Age. Maybe that explains the German results? As for French, a lot of Brits have French ancestors because the Britain of today was established by the Normans, who were the result of years of intermarriage between Scandinavian Vikings and Northern French Celts. They invaded England in 1066, probably the reason for the French blood!

Welcome
goldenmermaid! As I understand it (and I am no expert) percentages are tricky because they are comparing your results to samples of local populations. So the major invasions and migrations of Britian & Ireland are already accounted for in the population. So the higher French and/or German percentages (keep in mind these are lumped together) are probably more recent. The Ancestry DNA results I got had Britian and Ireland together, Scandinavian and then just "Europe West" and "Europe East" which was pretty unsatisfying.
dizzy I agree that Dan's video was non-controversial (unless your racists, in which case follow the sign) filler. But I did enjoy it for what it was.
You may well be right about Phil dying his hair brown before going black, but I can only speak from experience as a not quite ginger, but still kind of redhead (it's auburn). Natural (as well as chemical) red hair fades more quickly over time than other pigments. It of course can also be effected by the seasons and how much natural sunlight you get. My hair was much more red until I was about 14 and decided to expirement with temporary hair dye and not so temporary bleach and then shaved my head. There were periods of high school when looking at me you would just assume I was a brunette, especially with shorter hair and gel (as could be the case with spikey haired Phil). My waxing and waning copper tones still confuse one of my sisters (with light brown hair) but it's not much different than her getting almost blonde highlights during the summer. Our other sister is strawberry blonde who started out bright blonde as a child. Our brother was also a "towhead" but has brown hair and a red beard. Right now my hair looks dull brown on top and gets more and more red toward the ends. Hair is weird. (Also mildly annoyed that my husband and I who both had red headed Irish grandmothers ended up with a blond child. I apparently don't understand recessive genes). Phil's eyebrows often look ginger, but I doubt that he would look anything like Ed Sheeran right now if he stopped dying his hair. Who knows? I do wish he would just put us out of our misery by telling us or growing it out natural.
That is a great compilation of Dan liveshow moments (I was hoping that the post-pastel rant about gender and is love a social construct would be included). I would love for serious opinions from Dan to make their way either onto his main or side channel in topic video form, so long as they aren't done in this recent "dank philosopher" voice. I went back trying to figure out when that started, but his range of content and the different voices he uses in single videos is all over the place. Also I think his new room might amplify his deepening voice...

I dunno. Looking forward to his liveshow.

Dan makes me want to do one of these tests. My mom is adopted, so I know nothing about half of my genetics. Damn you, deppy! I was trying to avoid this!

Super unpopular opinion: I don't love that Phil's tumblr is now gonna be all fan art. Mind you, I'm not an artist. Please feel free to heavily disagree with me. I'm cool with that.
I just wish Phil used tumblr a bit more like Dan does (though, Dan's no ideal tumblr user either). I wish he would share posts with us that he likes, his "aesthetic", etc. Reblogging fan art feels like a cop-out. It feels like a very "Phil celebrating the phandom" thing to do as a means to further hide more of himself. Not that he ever reblogged stuff anyway, but my point is that I wish that was the direction he had chosen to go instead.
Now, for me, this seems to create a sort of weird situation where I imagine artists will balance more of their worth on whether Phil reblogs, but also for some, a reblog from him may become less valuable. Also, on a selfish level, it celebrates fan art more than other types of fandom contributions (see: fic). And understandably so, but like... still.
Point 3 - this is becoming a full-on essay now isn't it? - is that, while I love Dan and Phil's involvement with their fandom, I think this is just... too much? I understand that them "breaking the 4th wall" with us is what we love, but when Phil's entire tumblr is just fan art, it's not really a community thing anymore is it? It's a lot more public. This point is weak, I know. Whatever.
I realize this isn't all that different than #HeaderForDan, really. I just don't love it is all.

Dear all, the site will again be down for mantainence in the next 10-20 minutes, we are hoping to get this back up and running before Dan's liveshow. Sorry again for the inconvience but it will be worth it in the long run.
Please keep your eye on the IDB twitter for any updates.

I don't read their tumblr since I don't really use the platform, so it's an odd contrast to hear you say this - I personally always perceived
Jacksepticeye's tumblr as very personal even though it's 95% fan art. He does comment on a lot of the shares which of course adds a bit of his character, but I think his fandom really adores him for the amount of interaction he has on his tumblr and the community he creates through it.
Not opposing or criticising your opinion, I just find it interesting that other fandoms love it when their youtubers share their content and for you it seemed like a downgrade.

Thing is, he essentially did it already via likes on both tumblr and twitter. If he added commentary, that would absolutely change my mind, because then we'd certainly be getting
more of Phil. But right now, it just feels like less of him, because a reblog is just a more public like.

That was a very enjoyable live show, even before Phil unexpectedly showed up.
I’m glad we got to see more of their gaming room, especially the onesies ‘tour’ bit was fun.
Also I’m excited for their upcoming gaming vids, the Dan vs. Phil one sounds good, plus a new golfing one.

I loved this liveshow! He was all over the place, but seemed quite happy, and then Phil joined in

Also, all of the angles/the quality/just Dan = gorgeous imo. So much better than YouNow. I hope he does this again!
Any idea why he didn't go on YouNow today?

Loved the liveshow as well! They seemed so genuine, really wasn't expecting Phil and I secretly loved the filters.
Summary: Short but sweet.
