Dan & Phil Part X: Truth is like poetryphamnotof wrote: the quote continues "and most people fucking hate poetry"
Curious.
I don't think this should be the title this next time because there are so many other great titles and this isn't particularly relevant to anything that's currently going on, but it does feel relevant to Deppy in general, and the phandom in general, and I do think it'd be a cool thread title at some point maybe. So I'm just throwing it in here.
busy being happy~
Oqua, love this quote, love it as a thread name idea and definitely think it will be a must for when we get some brand new Big Revelation about their lifes and the phandom will inevitably freak out.
Now let's imagine what that revelation could be...

I didn't include Oqua's contribution as she said not to, and to save it for a time where it's more relevant

I know it's a little early because we're only on page 18 of thread 10, but phan boner would be a great thread name!

Hey, I really hate to be that person, especially as I don't find dan's original tweet offensive, but wouldn't titling the thread "Kinda queer and terrible" not be in accordance with the moderator note from the ranking thread, which stated:
I know a lot of people have reclaimed queer (heck, my tumblr and twitter dash/timeline is full of people saying "same" to dan's tweet), but likewise, a lot of (non-straight) people still view it as a pejorative and are uncomfortable with casual uses of it. Again, sorry to be that person, but yeah...I can see this being a problem later if I didnt mention it now lol. Truly know I'm not trying to create drama for drama's sake. I think "queer and terrible" is the best option on the poll, and I don't want to make more work for someone by requesting that we make a new poll with that option removed. I probably even want to see it as the title for the new thread! Maybe this could all be solved by figuring out how this example is different from the ranking thread examples. Really just want to know what is seen as good behavior in this forum. Sorryyyy
Obviously, this is different in that we aren't saying specific uses have reached the title of "queer and terrible," but it does seem to "poke fun at D&P's sexuality." If this is different, I'd just like to know in what way, so, as a user, I can have that line and know how to stay on the right side of it.Hey guys, in an effort to be sensitive to both Dan and Phil and to all users of this forum, the admin and moderators have decided not to make any rank titles that are sexual in nature or reference sexuality (i.e. things like "daddy," "no homo bean," or "p-l-a-t-o-n-i-c.") They're all funny and meant light-heartedly, but we want to avoid creating official forum features (such as rankings) that poke fun at D&P's sexuality. Additionally, the association between an individual's username and a label like "daddy" or "no homo" could cause confusion and/or discomfort in certain circumstances. I hope everyone understands!

Hi! Thank you greatnessflicker for writing this post, please don't be sorry; it's important to discuss these issues.greatnessflicker wrote:Hey, I really hate to be that person, especially as I don't find dan's original tweet offensive, but wouldn't titling the thread "Kinda queer and terrible" not be in accordance with the moderator note from the ranking thread, which stated:Obviously, this is different in that we aren't saying specific uses have reached the title of "queer and terrible," but it does seem to "poke fun at D&P's sexuality." The forum moderators still stand by that note from the ranking thread. The main difference here is that this is not an official forum feature; it's just a thread name suggestion. Thread names are decided by a community vote, unlike features such as rankings, which are chosen by the forum moderators.
As far as this thread title specifically: context and intent are important. The intent here is not derogatory, and the context relates to a direct quote from Dan. While phrases such as "no homo" and "p-l-a-t-o-n-i-c" are regularly used by the phandom to kind of poke fun at Dan and Phil, this thread name suggestion was taken word-for-word from a tweet by Dan, where 1) he was referring to Eurovision, not to himself and Phil, and 2) he was clearly taking a somewhat critical remark by the truck driver and putting an undeniably positive spin on it ("yes yes it is #ComeTogether").
In terms of clarification for users: This is a forum about Dan and Phil, and let's face it, discussion of their sexualities is pretty unavoidable. Dan and Phil themselves discuss sexuality and make veiled (and not-so-veiled) references to sex and sexuality all the time. What the mods wanted to avoid was embedding references to gender or sexuality into an official, easily-visible aspect of the forum such as rankings. Obviously within the threads of the IDB, individual users are quite free to play with sexuality references, as long as it remains light-hearted and never crosses the line into hateful/homophobic comments.
If anyone wants any further clarification on this topic or wants to share any other concerns, please feel free to do so here, or PM any mod if you want to discuss it privately!

Thanks for clearing all of that up for me oqua! One thing I've always appreciated about IDB is how democratic it is, from literally voting on the new thread titles to less concrete examples, so in that sense whatever we choose to name the next thread is legitimate
Also, I totally agree that dan put a positive spin on what was most likely an initially negative comment from an american trucker, and that in a way that makes it subversive, etc etc. All around a helpful post.

Yes yes yes. I never wanted to sound as if I think discussion of sexuality is out-of-line. In fact, I really appreciate it, and have participated in it, and think it would be completely unreasonable to expect anything less. I think everyone on this forum talks about in such a respectful manner, and just want to thank the mods and everyone for being awesome and creating this cool little community.oqua wrote: In terms of clarification for users: This is a forum about Dan and Phil, and let's face it, discussion of their sexualities is pretty unavoidable.
