What am I going to do when I have no internet for 2 weeks? I'm going to have to take an extra day off just to catch up with the thread.

Haven't read the last thread completely, so this may be redundant, but I was expecting Tipsy Talk to be just as awkward as Phil's video (which I found so so awkward and forced), but was pleasantly surprised and actually enjoyed it. I find it hard to believe they were filmed on the same day.

I think his 'random' humour came across really well a few years ago because at that time everyone was forcing the that sort of humour, which isn't as funny in the same way Dan's sarcastic internety humour gets eyerolls now. This made Phil seem a bit more naturally funny. Now, though, I'm not sure it works, and since people have pretty much abandon that sort of humour, he actually seems quite forced nowadays.

as someone who has only recently dove into the forum side of the fandom, and of whom originally was very dan-biased, i have to say these discussions have actually made me pay a lot more attention to phil ! i'd even be so bold to say im more biased towards him now after seeing discussions over him and really getting a deeper look into him as something other than 'the sidekick' or the name that came after dan's

when i was just a casual viewer of theirs its easier to focus on dan - his self-depreciating attitude and display of insecurities makes him completely nonthreatening and that darn pretty face of his and great sense of humor and insight really sweeps someone off their feet and rather easily too. he's easy to be a fan of and his content is easy to absorb and invites deeper analysis and discussion, thats kind of a thing that just comes naturally w/#relatable content and it makes people feel like hes someone they can read

at face-value, phil is someone very simple. as a casual viewer, i found his videos cute and fun but didn't feel the need to really think about his upbeat little anecdotes and would click through each video leaving satisfied with what i'd been given. so you can imagine how drastically different it is to come on a forum and see people point out that he was effortlessly controlling a whole collab down to each shown interaction and the stark contrast of how he portrays himself in recent videos vs older videos - its like seeing the real phil for the first time in a weird way ? if thats not too dramatic

but as a casual viewer i never thought twice about phil and knew him as this sweet cute guy that likes animals and is creative but thats all very simple, very standard and doesn't really embody a whole person and seeing the discussion beyond the surface is what brought me to love phil and really enjoy him as a person and not just this guy thats really cute friends w/dan

as i began to read through discussions i found that when i started to look into phil, like Really paid attention and tried to grasp at his true personality and decipher his reactions and consistencies in his behavior through time, i realized that he's really darn good at filtering his own content and showing people what he wants them to see and he can be much more subtle in his reactions and natural behavior/mannerisms than mr. falls out of his chair bc hes so caught off-guard howell which can make him harder to discuss and analyze and therefore not so much a hot topic all the time

i'm too busy panic-finishing a project i have to turn up tomorrow to make a long post but i just wanted to say that i love reading the phil discussion, keep it going, let's do more of that and less whining about what other people choose to post about shall we, i wish i could contribute but as i said, i'm busy and as always i find it really hard to read phil

jaej I agree with you. I think Phil is original and has an lets say a less common personality but he is not that incredibly special person that some people make him sound like. I never found him that weird/strange/different etc. It doesn't take away that he has a lot of qualities and he does think outside the box, but he is not that incredibly special genious snowflake.

Thanks for showing support of my Phil theory guys, haha, all this time I've been worried it's all in my head. You make some good points about how both Dan and Phil seem to work. Honestly I wonder what it must be like for two guys like them to work together - how do they plan stuff? how do they come up with the ideas? how do they agree on them? how do they follow through? Despite their flaws they obviously make a good team.

(Two random pieces of info I remember from somewhere: Phil is super organized with colour coded folders. Dan said he likes to set goals and then "desperately try to achieve them".)

He is unique not exactly eccentric so I agree with the exaggeration part. When I think of Phil and his content I think that its different from the average youtuber. It has a different theme, concept, feel (atleast to me). Phil as alittledizzy stated, is a bit weird but that is not why his fans adore him. I mean his randomness makes me crack up and his one-liners in the gaming videos are gold (if you listen hard enough) but he is more than that. Also creativity is essentially thinking out of the box which is something he is gifted with as we saw in the Impossible Quiz game. He does have a unique way of thinking. Maybe that's why people grant him that personality trait.

I gotta agree with you on this. Sure, I'm just as interested in reading interpretations of his behavior as I am in reading Dan's. There are less things we can confidently conclude about Phil in comparison to Dan, so I guess that makes him more ~mysterious, more ~distant, and therefore, more ~strange. But boyyyy do my eyes roll when people start labeling him as some sort of enigma. I think some people glorify his eccentricity just to make the attempts at psychoanalysis more interesting. No direct shade intended though, I've only skimmed the recent Phil posts so I don't know what has been said in this discussion; I can only speak in general terms. I'm not autistic but I'm far from neurotypical, so take this however you'd like.

I'm not sure how much of this is directed at my Phil/Stéphane post, but I gotta make clear that my intentions for that post were not to accentuate a perception on how weird Phil is. My main goal was to attempt figuring out why Phil related to this main character from a surrealist movie. Stéphane, as much of his character that I can gather from a Wikipedia article, is a character caught up in his imagination and drive for creativity and had no one that accepted or related to him on any level due to this. Essentially, what does Phil think of himself that makes him capable of seeing himself in this character? That's all, nothing about my own interpretations of Phil's personality.

Other than that, it does kind of suck that the common view of Phil is strangely romanticized the way it is. Not that aspects of Dan aren't, but for Phil, it seems especially so.

Anyway, I'm really flattered that some people were interested by what I said. Especially karma_yeah's post, gave me a fuzzy feel.

I'm pretty sure I always mention appreciating badass phil in his subtle teasing. He is a boss at keeping things below the surface so everything goes over your head the first time. He really knows how to wait and say something spontaneous, sometimes to get a rise out of Dan but other times because he's just a little troll. I'll be the first to say I hate the cinammon image of Phil in the phandom almost as much as I hate the depressed, suicidal existential image of Dan. He is no where near innocent and should not be babied. I think for Phil his polite caring nature gets interpreted the wrong way. Agree with everything said above. Don't want to get ahead of myself, but I feel lucky to have joined the phandom at the time I did.

This is all true, but at the same time its still a hilarious thing to tweet to over 2 million people, some who might not be tuned into the vocab. Dan has a bunch of random celebrities following him, like Gerard Way and Stephen Fry. It's also amusing to remember that the good people at ChannelFlip check up on the social media accounts of the people they manage on a regular basis. Almost as funny as the mental image of some random suit at CrunchyRoll watching Dan hug a Haru pillow topless.

This is actually the funniest parts of them getting any sort of actual recognition. They come from the internet but get a bunch of attention from non-internetees (??). While I don't think someone like Gerard Way or the person responsible for recruiting them for the crunchyroll AD would bat an eye at this sort of stuff, I do wonder how much they actually follow Dan (do they watch his videos too?) and why they follow him in the first place. That being said, I'm more interested in how much of his family watches his videos or reads his twitter. I'm trying to imagine if I'd make a joke like that somewhere where my grandma might see it, and not actually die from embarrassment.

None of it is, because I didn't I read your post lol. I might have to scroll back up and give it a glance, because I would definitely think that has more validity than, for example, saying his skull is so large because it holds an entire universe worth of creativity.

You ain't lying. I love that about him as well. However, I'm thinking more along the lines of how we have #campydan flailing his arms about, prissy-facing the shit out of his (cracked) lips, and what can be considered more effeminate inflections in his speech. Phil has those over-the-top moments too, but then he'll do it more subtly and I kind of get my life from it. I've labeled it #zestyphil because I can't think of a better descriptor atm.

To give a recent example, at like 6:35 of Tipsy Talk when he says he'd rather be a robot. That snappy little hand gesture. I don't know why I get my entire fucking life when he does those things. I just love the thought that he has that in him.

#campydan is very obvious because he does it so egregiously but #campyphil is hand flicks and subtle eye rolls. His face clearly shows when he's done with something sneaky. Like when Dan kept shouting "Everywhere" in the dp crafting video he gives this looks to dan like b*tich shut up. It's hilarious He is just as sassy as Dan.
