Now my memory is shit and maybe I'm wrong, especially since Dan hasn't done anything in ages, but when he did the Tier List stream to me that sounds more like a Phil idea than anything but I didn't see anyone say that obviously Phil's hand was on it (or maybe there was but not as vocal)

It's obvious that they give each other opinions and advice on things, I don't doubt that, it's the reaction of the phandom that gives me pause. It's like...

Like if they weren't Dan and Phil, but they were a generic straight YouTube couple, and wherever the woman did something good, that people deemed enjoyable for all, then oobviously the man had some input into it, but the opposite doesn't even cross people minds because duh, yeah maybe they TALK but he obviously does things by himself, he doesn't need HER imput. That would give me pause and makes me pull a face.

Yeah, sometimes it feels similar. Obviously we're not talking about misogyny in this case, and I'm well aware I took a harsher example than needed, but that is the vibe it sometimes give.

Anyway, sorry, rant over

In this case I would see it less like a giving credit thing - at least in the case of Rizzo's post, I haven't seen anything else on fandom social media myself so I can't judge that - and more like a cute thing.

I guess your example doesn't resonate with me because I think it would absolutely be the same way if Dan posted something Phil-esque or suddenly came out with like, a cute shirt with plants all over it. Especially given that this isn't even the first time we've seen Dan influenced themes in Phil's merch - I mean, 'stay hydrated' was very clearly a thing both of them said in videos and Phil came out with a hydrated merch line. It's less like a competition where one of them is being awarded credit over the other and more like a 'they've been together so long they're merging' thing. I don't think anyone views Phil as incapable of coming up with his own introvert themed merch. At least I really fucking hope not, because that'd be shitty, yeah.

We’ve talked about this on Idb before but dan getting credit for Phil things happens when Phil uploads videos, even if dan isn’t mentioned in them, or when Phil tweets, or even when Phil shares stories with us. Not everyone does it and it’s not an attack but even with this quiz there were many comments about people hoping Dan showed up. I’m not trying to start anything but when people say they don’t see that behavior - that Dan is always brought up- it’s not hard to find.

Obviously people care about Dan and this isn’t about that but I’d hope people treat Phil’s videos and projects like this quiz with the same respect they treat Dan’s hypothetical book or project.

I’d even say personally it’s affected how much I talk about Phil here. I used to post more because I was excited about Phil’s videos and wanted to talk about them but this isn’t really a place where Phil conversation happens without it turning into something else. Kind of discouraging when you want to discuss active content.

I do get that. I think it's natural when this is a forum for both of them and people miss them so intently to want to read signs of activity in one when the other is active. But also, I do get what you're saying. And I also really, really hope people have as much care and put as much energy into Phil's projects as Dan's. The thing I was responding to was about giving Dan credit for Phil's work (which I didn't see anyone actually doing), not bringing Dan up in general. Because yeah that? Absolutely happens.

In ye olden days I actually used to be on this soapbox a lot. It drove me absolutely crazy that no one really wanted to talk about Phil as much as I did. I think it kinda goes both ways now - people are mad at/upset at/upset by Dan so that gets sparked more often and makes the convo about Dan no matter what the original topic was, and also people are more excited by anything Dan does because it's a sign of life from Dan. Meanwhile Phil is just... stable, out here steadily giving us content, but it just doesn't spark that adrenaline burst (positive or negative) that Dan does. And that kinda sucks.

But for my part I'm excited as fuck about Phil's quiz stream later and will definitely be here to rave about him and all his sequins.

Oh, ha, maybe this is where my disconnect is because when I see Dan-branding in "I'd rather be at home" it's a bit of '00s Hot Topic vibes that don't appeal to me at all. I'm glad that people are enjoying this merch concept enough to have relating it to Dan communicate something positive about Dan and not something negative. (I also perceive Phil as generally more creative, which I think is a widespread phandom perspective? but makes it feel less like, thank god Dan is giving Phil ideas and more huh, this is a different tact that is more reminiscent of what we've seen from Dan.)

I don't like this sort of comparison. What does "more creative" even mean? I think they have different strengths, but I'm not sure their different sets of talents can be added up to determine which one is "more creative".

Maybe we can turn that around: which are Phil's, and Dan's, creative strengths?

I'll start: I think Phil is very good at being weird--thinking outside the box, going off in at an unexpected angle, making improbable associations. I think Dan is very good at exploring nuance and (sometimes, not always) nailing the way he tells a story or turns a phrase; relatedly, I think he has good comedic timing.

Like I said that was a maybe stronger/harsher example than needed but it was the kind of vibe I get sometimes when people in phandom seem to give out when it looks like they really want Dan to have something to do with Phil things because it meanshappens hes still engaging? Again, not specifically here, more a general vibe that's been happening more and more as Dan has stopped giving us content/things to engage with.

I think Dan is an outstanding storyteller, the Bahamas video and the deodorant one are some that I've rewatched so many times. He captures attention, knows comedic timing, I love his sketch. I think that's his strength.

I think Phil has the kind of humor and captivating energy that makes him engaging and I see him as a show host of ways. I also think he has a more "active" visual creativity I guess, which is why my dream is forever an animated show from him

As much as Dan loves proving he’s Phil trash # 1, I think he was playing for the purpose of being able to tell Phil how it was working for the users.

I wish he would have said this will be a regular thing, but I actually prefer a chat or a game and chat format rather than all quiz. But the Dan participation was such a lovely surprise!

ETA: The site now says, “The next game isn’t scheduled yet.” So hopefully he will do more. I just wish he would also do chatty live shows. Or I guess he could just do a Q&A or a catch up chat on AmaxingPhil.

That was so much fun. I wasn’t going to watch because I don’t care about the quiz part but then I decided to join just as he started. Glad I did because even though I didn’t play, it was nice I treated it like a liveshow. He was so cute and I hope someone recorded it because I’d like to watch again. A+ for dan in the background it made phil such a smiley boy. I love them both so much. That was fun because I had expectations

Based on how professional the company is yeah I'd guess it was someone with the quiz site there to ensure everything went smoothly.
