I cannot stress enough the importance of voting. Collectively, it makes a difference, so sign off, get off your ass, and haul your ass to your polling stations - or you could wake up with something like we did in the US.

Yes!!! I completely agree with this. Undertale is a perfect example, it is an emotional game in general, with a lot of funny moments leading up to the sad ones. They seemed to bounce off the funny moments quite well but held back at the sad ones? Imo, Phil more than Dan. I dunno, some parts didn't seem like genuine reactions, or that they held back from showing how they actually felt. Agreed though, doing that would make them more vulnerable, and in Phils case he doesn't seem to do that often. (Mainly saw this in the last epsiodes of Undertale.)fondsmiles wrote:droopy wrote:I think, if they were to play longer games that require more investment (of time, energy, and emotions), they'll have to give themselves permission to have quiet moments, serious moments, and just learn how to entertain via reaction as opposed to humor.I agree with this A LOT. No question, deppy are really funny and I enjoy their senses of humour a lot, both their individual and their collective ones. The banter in their videos is always great and definitely always has me smiling.colickygoat wrote: But it's not really necessary to be witty all the time, sometimes I just want to watch them play a game for the pleasure of their company. It's like watching my friends play while I fall asleep next to them. It's so comforting and I don't need to laugh all the way through.
But I do agree that they kind of seem to think that being funny is... all they can do, to say it drastically? When I know for sure that lots of people in the fandom appreciate their genuine, quiet selves just as much.
I would love for them to have a better mixture between that. If there's an emotional moment in the game, let it be. As a viewer it's nice too to get to cherish that, instead of being forced away from it into making it funny again.
This is all a bit exaggerated, I think they did allow emotional moments in some playthroughs, like in undertale for example. I just kind of wish there was a better balance between funny and a bit more serious games. But, well, also a thought I had: Being funny on the channel, have it be lighthearted bants, that's probably a lot easier for them to do. It's easy to film, an easy way to make people smile, it's not deep and complicated. Having more serious games means, in a slight way, also making themselves more vulnerable. That takes courage to do that. While I think we'd all very appreciate them for doing so, I can understand why they may be hesitant. Humour is protection too.
I also want to send a big heart out to Sims top domestic banter, great characters that they seem to love and that I definitely love by now, and I am so excited for the Evan/Dab story line. If you're lurking here pls don't quit Sims guys, my heart still needs it.
I'd love to see them play serious games, long, story driven ones like Life is Strange. But I feel like it might not work? Just because of how they were with Undertale. Don't get me wrong, I loved Undertale and I think they did too, but it is nice to have some moments that aren't all about banter and to be a little serious for a bit. Just bridges that connection with the viewers and shows a different side to the people you're watching. It's nice to know that people have a soft side.
But it is completely their decision what games they play and their reasoning behind it. I am not in any way expecting a Life is Strange playthrough at all, but we can dream.
Also, please vote if you're in the UK!!!!! Hopefully labour can win! It's super important, please please please vote

Another thing is that they don't tend to be emotional on camera and when they are it's just they're just kinda like "awww that's cute". Maybe they just feel uncomfortable being emotional on camera and some things in Life is Strange should make you emotional and if they just sat there awkwardly or tried to bant over it, it would be uncomfortable at best. So I get why they don't play Life is Strange, doesn't change the fact I think they should.lishachi wrote:I'd love to see them play serious games, long, story driven ones like Life is Strange. I can't believe Dan got retweeted by Edward Snowden and got a DM from Jeremy Corbyn - what a world we live in.
I'd love for labour to win, but I really don't think it'll happen :'( Fingers crossed for a miracle!

I really wonder what Corbyn would DM Dan. I meant to mention this at some point earlier when you guys were talking politics - if I remember my lectures on media impact studies, it was the paper called "The People's Choice" that found that at some point before the election, you can't actually change people's mind anymore. You can reinforce their believes or mobilise them, but if Dan were to tweet now (or last week) to support a specific candidate, it wouldn't actually be that effective. And I might not be following UK politics but I don't see one of the prime candidates DM'ing Dan to thank him for "only" mobilising voters?
Edit: After a quick run of the photo through photoshop (thanks for using a high def photo and a soft brush to block out the message), you can actually figure out single words. But I don't want to be too invasive here so I won't post the edit. Not that it's really all that relevant anyways, probably.

My guess is Corbyn's thanking him for getting involved and getting the youth out...maybe a potential offer to work more closely together in the future?
Am I close lol
Also yeah, go and vote everybody! I voted this morning and it was depressing seeing all the old folks there. Young people need to make our voices heard or old people are going to keep making our choices for us.

Would you guys actually like to see Dan be more involved politically? I don't see it happening, tbh. We are talking about a guy who is worried about people getting upset about potential choices in a video game (i.e. the reason they wouldn't play Life is Strange). I kinda don't see Dan talking confidentally about political matters such as the refugee crisis and so on.plath wrote:My guess is Corbyn's thanking him for getting involved and getting the youth out...maybe a potential offer to work more closely together in the future?

I guess we shouldn't underestimate Dan's level of fame in the UK. He was a radio personality for some time and he's been on TV, people know him, even outside of Youtube. Like, Stephen Fry follows him on Twitter, Dan's really not some obscure internet person anymore. I can totally see a politician contacting him and thanking him for mobilising younger people to vote, I don't think it's that weird (even though I do think Dan was not expecting that at all ). (Also please leave the actual message alone, guys. Dan blacked it out because he doesn't want us to know what the message said. Let's respect that.)
Also: Yeah, go vote, UK IDB peeps, if you haven't yet!

Oh I totally agree, but that doesn't mean that Corbyn wouldn't offer something like that. Dan would probably turn it down, though his friendship with Owen Jones might inspire him to do something later on. Possibly when the whole Youtube thing has died down and his current fanbase have changed? Who knows what the future holds tbh. It's clearly something he cares a lot about, and he's a generally articulate and persuasive chap. If he did choose to get more heavily involved with the Labour party (in whatever capacity), I'd be all for it.LtrllySusan wrote:Would you guys actually like to see Dan be more involved politically? I love how Dan's scared of voicing opinions on popular TV shows but is unapologetic about his political beliefs. Shows the strength of his convictions tbh. I think he does it in a really sensitive, non-preachy way as well - he makes it obvious what he believes without ever being like HERE IS MY OPINION YOU MUST AGREE RIGHT NOW. He's a good egg.
nope.

I would love to see Dan at least talk more about politics and such. I mean the Green brothers manage to talk about real issues without being horribly devisive and I've seen somethings about Dan looking up to John so it would be interesting to see him work some "world issues" into his channel as part of his rebranding.

I came here after I saw edward snowden retweeted dan and Jeremy corbyn dm'd him, so unexpected.
Like plath said I'm assuming Jeremy thanked Dan for trying to help with getting younger people out to vote, they're both two of my favourite people so it made me smile when I saw Jeremy dm'd him
I would love to see dan talking more about politics! It would be interesting to see him talking about political and world issues. I don't see it happening, but i would be all for it (being a politics student and all hahah).
Also I know this has been said but please go out and vote if you haven't already! This is so important

I keep saying this, but it's so, so wonderful to see them being more active about politics and using their platforms for good. The Snowden retweet and Corbyn DM are pretty interesting. I've never really used Twitter so I never looked at Snowden's account, but his one followed account is the NAS

Is that a reference to the famous Magic The Gathering Butt Cracks reddit thread? I've seen that specific pose used a few times and it was always in relation to that reddit user - check the 4th photo for comparison.

Yay, been waiting all day for Dan's democracy selfie! It made me smile which was much needed as I'm feeling pretty stressed about this election. My youngest daughter was diagnosed with ASD today (after many years of waiting) and the idea of a tory government cutting funding for education and the NHS is even more terrifying than it was yesterday. I really hope a miracle happens and that Labour beat the tories.
